The annual Liphook Carnival, which has history dating back to the early 1900's, now always takes part in the village on the night the clocks go back. This year Hollycombe supported the event with our Dad's Army - Jack Jones butchers van float built by Hollycombe volunteers and was supported on the night by other volunteers who got into spirit of the event and dressed up as the main characters and walked the procession alongside the float. It was an enjoyable and fun evening and the float and engines created a lot of interest throughout the procession as it made its way around the streets of the village. Our efforts were awarded with a first prize cup in the steam section.
To recreate the scene where Jones' butchers van is pulled by a steam roller after it breaks down when the van's fuel bag is punctured the float was pulled by the Avery family's 1924 Aveling & Porter 'F' type steam roller which has been visiting Hollycombe since the steam rally. Hollycombe are very grateful to them for kindly offering to take part with their engine and pull the float for us in the evening procession.
Hollycombe's Burrell traction engine Sunset No 2 also had an outing from the collection down to the village and took part in the main carnival procession following behind the float. In the main village entertaining the crowds prior to and during the procession was two fairground organs owned by Hollycombe volunteers, a 31 keyless Grand McCarthy organ a 89 key Van De Broek.
